William Henry Gates III
Co-Founder at Microsoft Corporation
William Henry Gates III, popularly known as Bill Gates (born October 28, 1955), is a former software developer, American business magnate, and philanthropist. He is quite popular in the tech industry for co-founding Microsoft Corporation, the world's largest personal computer software company. Born in Seattle, Washington, Gates was the middle child of an affluent family. His mother served on charitable boards, while his father was a proud attorney.
Gates attended Lakeside School, a private school in Seattle, and was enrolled at Harvard University in 1973. While at Harvard, Gates continued to explore his interest in computer programming and co-authored his first software program with Paul Allen, a version of the game "tic-tac-toe."
Career
Gates found himself spending more time working on his computer projects than attending classes, and he eventually dropped out of Harvard in 1975 to start Microsoft with Allen. Together, they developed and sold software for the Altair 8800, an early personal computer, and went on to become pioneers in the personal computer industry. Their company slowly started to gain momentum in the personal computer industry. In 1980, Microsoft entered into a partnership with IBM to provide the operating system for the IBM PC. This helped Microsoft to establish itself as one of the major players in the software industry.
Under Gates' leadership, Microsoft became the world's leading personal computer software company, developing and licensing software for computers worldwide. Gates was instrumental in the development of numerous software products, including Windows, the Office suite, and Internet Explorer.
In 2000, Gates stepped down as CEO of Microsoft but continued to serve as chairman of the board until 2014. In addition to his work at Microsoft, Gates is also known for his philanthropic efforts through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which focuses on global health, education, and poverty alleviation.
Gates has quite a few awards and achievements under his belt. Gates got the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016. It’s the highest civilian award in the United States for his philanthropic work and contributions to technology. And in 2005 as well, Gates got an honorary knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II for his contributions to the UK economy through Microsoft and, like always, his philanthropic work.
Personal Life
Bill Gates married Melinda Gates in 1994, whom he met while working at Microsoft. They have three children together and are popular for their philanthropy through their foundation. However, Bill and Melinda Gates decided to part ways and announced their divorce in May 2021. In his spare time, Gates is an avid reader and enjoys playing bridge. He has also authored several books on technology and business, including "The Road Ahead" and "Business at the Speed of Thought."
