History

Verizon Communications Inc., aka Verizon, is an American multinational telecommunications conglomerate and a Dow Jones Industrial Average corporate component. It is headquartered at 1095 Avenue of the Americans in Midtown Manhattan; New York City is incorporated in Delaware. In 1984, the United States Department of Justice made AT & T Corporation compulsory to break up the Bell System into seven companies. Each of the Regional Bell Operating Companies is commonly referred to as "Baby Bells ." Bell Atlantic also came into existence the same year. Bell Atlantic became the parent of New Jersey Bell, Bell of Pennsylvania, Diamond State Telephone, and the C&P Telephone companies with a trading area from New Jersey to Virginia. In the mid-1990s, all Bell Atlantic operating companies assumed the holding company name. Bell Atlantic spread in New York and New England states by merging with fellow Baby Bell NYNEX.

The merged company then moved its headquarters from Philadelphia to NYNEX's old headquarters in New York City. Bell Atlantic acquired GTE-operated telecommunications companies across most of the rest of the country not already in Bell Atlantic's footprint. Bell Atlantic changed its name to Verizon, the combination of a portmanteau of veritas (Latin: truth) and horizon. Verizon entered into content ownership by acquiring AOL and Yahoo in 2015 and 2017. Later both AOL and Yahoo spin-off into a new division named -Oath Inc., which rebranded as Verizon Media in January 2019 and later spun off and rebranded to Yahoo after its sale to Apollo Global Management. In 2005, Verizon initiated negotiations to buy long-distance carrier MCI, and it accepted Verizon's initial $6.75 billion but received a higher bid-offer from Qwest Communications. Again in March 2005, Verizon increased its bid to $7.6 billion; MCI accepted the deal on March 29, 2005.

Verizon got international recognition and access to MCI's million corporate clients and international holdings, expanding Verizon's presence into global markets with this acquisition. In 2007, Verizon brought a new service to VCast called V Cast Mobile TV, which used Verizon's multiple cellular technologies to allow people to watch TV on their devices. In June 2008, Verizon Wireless acquired wireless carrier Alltel for $28.1 billion. The acquisition brought in 13 million customers letting Verizon Wireless surpass AT & T in several customers and reach new markets in rural areas. In October 2010, Verizon wireless refunded $77.8 million as FCC penalties for overcharging 15 million customers for data services. The company stated that the overcharges were accidental and amounted only to a few dollars per customer.

On February 4, 2010, 4chan (an anonymous English website) began receiving reports from Verizon Wireless customers complaining about the difficulties accessing the site's image boards. On February 7, 2010, Verizon Wireless confirmed the blocking of 4chan.org after Verizon's security and external experts detected a sweep attack on 4chan's associated IP address. In August 2010, the chairpersons of Verizon and Google agreed to define and limit network neutrality. In December 2010, Verizon started capturing the network market by introducing its 4G LTE network in 38 markets and airports in seven additional cities. The company planned to expand its 4G service continuously for three years. In January 2011, it acquired Terremark, an information technology services company, for $1.4 billion. It acquired Hughes Telematics.
