History
Telegram is an instant cross-platform messaging system that offers its users video calling services. Sharing several other features, Telegram was launched for iOS on 14 August 2013 and for Android in October 2013. Telegram servers are distributed across the globe to avoid frequent data load by establishing 5 data centers in varied regions. Nikolai and Pavel founded Telegram in 2013. Previously, the brother duo founded VK, a Russian social network that they left in 2014 after the claims of VK being taken over by Putin alliances. Nikolai created the MTProto protocol from the brothers' duo, which acts as the base of Telegram messenger. And Pavel offered financial support and infrastructure from his Digital Fortress fund.
Also, Telegram is not based on profit-earning objectives. The messenger is registered as a nonprofit organization. Further, Telegram is registered as an American LLC, and the company doesn't disclose where it rents its offices. It is done to shelter its employees from unwarranted influence and protect the application users from governmental data requests. According to Pavel, the company was headquartered in Berlin, Germany, between 2014 to early 2015. However, the headquarter was shifted because the company failed to get residence permits for everyone on the team. It is said that after Pavlov left Germany, he moved countries with an expert team of 15 programmers. For now, the Telegram team has been based in Dubai since 2017. In October 2014, South Korean governmental; surveillance plans drove many country residents to Telegram. Further, in December 2014, the messenger announced achieving 50 million daily active users who generate 1 billion messages per day, and 1 million new users sign up for the messenger every week. In September 2015, Telegram further announced that the application had received 60 million active users and the messenger delivered 12 billion messages per day. In February 2016, Telegram achieved the milestone of 100 million monthly active users and 3,50,000 new user sign-ins/day with 15 million daily active users. In 2017, the application got 180 million monthly active users every week. On 14 March 2019, Telegram made a new record with 3 million unique users signed within 24 hours. While Pavel didn't specify the reason for this spike, it is considered to have resulted from the outage of Facebook and its family applications (including Instagram).
