History

Cigna was formed in 1982 merger of the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company (C.G.) and INA Corporation, the parent corporation of the insurance company of North America and the first stock insurance company in America. The company was named using a mix of letters from the merging companies, C.G. and INA. C.G. was established in 1865.

However, the Insurance Company of North America was established in 1792. The Fire at great Chicago burned for two days in October 1871, destroying 2000 acres and leaving 100,000 Illinois people homeless. INA paid $650,000, one of only 51 insurance companies to pay claims. Cigna was one of the Companies with a large international network comparable to AIG, Zurich, and Allianz before selling its domestic, international property and casualty business to ACE insurance company which is Bermuda-based. In 1997, Cigna sold most of its insurance operations to Lincoln National Corporation. Cigna has functions in 30 countries with approximately 35,800 employees and managed around $53.734 billion in assets.

In 2002, it was alleged for violating the Securities Exchange Act for earning manipulation.

The company's common stock price plummeted significantly as a result. In October 2011, Cigna became ready to buy HealthSpring Inc. for $3.8 billion to jump-start business selling. The U.S. health insurer Anthem Inc. declared that it would acquire Company Cigna for $47 billion in cash and stock in June 2015. Moreover, Cigna Corp called off its $48 billion merger agreement with Anthem Inc Anthem, stating that it would continue to enforce its rights under the merger agreement while remaining committed to closing the transaction. In June 2020, Cigna Company formed a strategic alliance with Priority Health in order to make health care coverage affordable and accessible to Michigan employers and customers as well. Later in October 2020, Cigna and Envision Healthcare renewed their agreement to include Envision clinicians as in-network providers for Cigna's members.
